OpenRouter x Sensay

Written by Angus | Sep 16, 2025 9:47:17 AM

Last month, we integrated OpenRouter on Sensay. This integration is an integral element of the Sensay offering, allowing us to deliver always-on, fail-safe AI solutions. This integration means that if one of the LLMs or providers that Sensay uses goes offline, OpenRouter automatically switches to another.

Here's everything you need to know about this integration:

What is Sensay?

Sensay helps businesses create AI Chatbots powered by AI agents, designed to help you sell, support, and scale.

Setting up an AI Agent on Sensay is simple and takes a matter of minutes.

You can train your AI Agent on your company's data, including files, links, and text.

Sensay handles the heavy lifting by sorting, extracting, and preparing your data so your AI Chatbot is ready to go in under five minutes.

What is OpenRouter?

OpenRouter acts as a universal gateway to 60+ LLM model providers, including GPT, Claude, and Llama. This means businesses don't need to be tied to just one LLM model.

OpenRouter offers sub-2-Second switching, so as soon as an issue is detected, it switches the user to a different LLM, meaning users have an uninterrupted experience.

Why Sensay uses OpenRouter?

Sensay’s mission is to give businesses AI infrastructure they can depend on.

By leveraging OpenRouter, we remove a single point of failure from our tech stack and guarantee that your AI Chatbot will stay live, no matter what happens with individual model providers.

Sensay Tech Architecture

Here’s the Sensay tech architecture and how OpenRouter fits into it:

  1. User Query
A customer interacts with your AI Chatbot via web widget, API, or embedded interface.

  2. Sensay AI Engine
The Sensay AI Engine processes the input, retrieves relevant knowledge from your company’s data (files, links, text), and builds the best possible prompt for the model.

  3. OpenRouter Layer
The request is sent through OpenRouter, which first attempts to use your main model (e.g., GPT-5). Each model has multiple providers, if all providers are down, then OpenRouter switches to a failover model from a different provider.

  4. Response Delivery
The response is returned to Sensay, where it’s formatted and delivered to the end user.

That's a wrap!

With the OpenRouter integration, Sensay delivers a resilient infrastructure to all of its users.

Clients can experience a fully uninterrupted experience without ever needing to worry about downtime.
